China Reports Security Law Improved Hong Kong's Legal Framework
"Over the past five years since the national security law in Hong Kong was implemented, Hong Kong's legal framework improved," said Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning during a briefing in Beijing. She further emphasized that the law has resulted in "greater social stability and solidarity" within Hong Kong society.
The law, which was imposed by Beijing in 2020 in response to large-scale anti-government protests in 2019, has faced strong criticism. Detractors claim it has been wielded as a tool to suppress dissent, restrict freedoms, and silence opposition.
"Lawful rights and freedom of Hong Kong residents enjoy are fully protected," Mao firmly stated.
"Certain Western politicians and anti-China groups are unjustly attacking 'One Country, Two Systems' and Hong Kong's rule of law, exposing their true intention to destabilize the region," the spokeswoman said, noting that Hong Kong has "achieved high-quality development" with "high-level security."
Mao's comments come just days after the League of Social Democrats, Hong Kong's final remaining opposition party, revealed it would disband after 19 years of activism, as reported by media.
Since its handover from the UK to China in 1997, Hong Kong has operated under the "One Country, Two Systems" framework, which guarantees certain freedoms and autonomy from Beijing.
