China Urges U.S. to “Stop Meddling” in Tibet

(MENAFN) China sharply condemned the United States on Tuesday, urging Washington to cease its interference in Tibet-related matters.

At a Beijing press briefing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning declared that the U.S. is in “no position to point fingers at China.”

She stressed the need for the U.S. to fully grasp the significance and sensitivity of Xizang-related issues, warning Washington to recognize the Dalai Lama group’s anti-China separatist agenda and to honor previous commitments made to China regarding the region. Mao used Xizang,”the Chinese term for Tibet.

Mao also demanded that the U.S. “stop meddling in those issues and stop sending any wrong signals in any form to Tibet independence forces.”

The remarks come shortly after U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio extended birthday wishes to the Dalai Lama on Saturday via X, stating, “The Dalai Lama continues to inspire with his message of unity, peace, and compassion.”

Reaffirming China’s stance, Mao insisted that Tibetan affairs are “purely China’s internal affairs,” and “brook no external interference.” She characterized the current Dalai Lama as “not a purely religious figure, but a political exile engaged in anti-China separatist activities under the cloak of religion.”

Furthermore, Mao dismissed the Dalai Lama and the so-called ‘Xizang government-in-exile’ as lacking any legitimate authority to represent or determine the future of the people of Xizang.

Historically, China has maintained control over Tibet since 1951, framing its takeover as a “peaceful liberation.” Following a failed 1959 uprising against Chinese rule, the Dalai Lama fled to Dharamsala, India, where he formed the Tibetan parliament and government-in-exile.

China refuses to acknowledge this exile government, asserting Tibet’s integration with China dates back to the 13th century. Contrarily, the Dalai Lama claims Tibet was a fully independent state prior to the arrival of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army.
